Dabolim Airport



Dabolin Airport is the gateway to the state of Goa, is the principal connection for the Goa state with the country and other cities of the world. The airport is located to 4 kilometers from the center of the Vasco da Gama city, and lies on the top of a rocky plateau, it is the only domestic and international airport of the Goa State, it also is a military airport and controlled by the Naval Army, but is also used for civil aviation purpose.

The airport was built still in the 1950s, by the Estado da India Portuguesa, in April of 1962 the airport was occupied by the Indian Navy’s air. In 1966 begun to operate the public sector aviation, now known now as Indian Airlines, and in the early 1980s, the charter flight business began its operations, pioneered by Condor Airlines of Germany. The airport receives an estimate of 700 flights per year, 90% of them are international charter tourist flights, and about 150 to 200 thousand foreign tourists arrive in these charter flights.

The airport counts with 688 hectares, 14 of them is destined to a civil enclave; the airport's brick and mortar structure have a space of 12,000 square meters, 2000 square meters for the domestic terminal, 1000 square meters for an international terminal, and the remaining space is for other services. Some years back was built large civilian terminal, at this naval aerodrome to accommodate Goa’s rapidly increasing air traffic; this terminal has facilities as State Bank of India foreign exchange desks, post office counters, and counters for domestic airlines. Domestic terminal is designed to process 350 arrival and departures simultaneously, and international terminal is meant for 250, and the Navy of India has 250 paramilitary personnel stationed at the airport for security purposes, and park of the airport is designed to support 84 cars and 8 buses.

The large concentration of civilian traffic in the period is between 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm during weekdays, because it is also a naval airport, and the morning is restricted for military flight training purposes. But the sub-post office and branches of several domestic airlines are opened from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Other facilities of the airport is the counters of the prepaid taxis and private taxis near of the main exit; fixed fares to virtually everywhere in the State are displayed behind the desk, pay there and give the receipt to the driver when you arrive.

Some airlines that operate in the Dabolim airport are: Indian Airlines, Air Deccan, Jet Airways India, Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet, Air Sahara, IndiGo Air, Go Air, SriLankan Airlines, and Air India.
