The Village



Varkala Village is a pretty and calm small town that is known in Malayalam as Papa Nashini, which means “Sin Destroyer”, this seaside town at the moment located to 40 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the Kerala State, the town is easily accessible by road and rail, and now is great place for tourist, both Indian and foreign. This place offers you beautiful white sand beach called Papanasam Beach, natural springs, and is an important center of many Hindu pilgrimage.

This town is associated with ancestor worship; hundreds of Hindu devotees perform “Vavubali”, a ritual performed for ancestor soul to rest in peace, on the moon day of the Malayalam month Karkidam. They also go there after praying at the Janardhana Swamy Temple, which is offered to Lord Vishnu, this temple is believed to be almost 2000 years old, is built on a very steep hill, and in traditional Kerala architecture; it has a circular building with a red-tiled roof houses the main shrine. And its naturally spring is believed has curative properties and make the sea water there holy, and a dip in the holy waters of this beach will purify your body and soul, washing out all your sins.

Other important place in the town is the Samadhi of the Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri, who was a saint; reformer and the leader of the Ezhava community made Varkala his principle place in the period between 1855 and 1928. He preached the adage of “one caste, one God and one religion for all men”, when he established on Varkala in 1904, made his cottage, on atop of the hill and this was visited by Tagore and Gandhi. After of his dead was built the Samadhi and now is used as a prayer hall. These places are especially for devotees, and have a great religious significance for the Hindu community.

The tourist attraction of the town is the Papanasam Beach which is a place of natural beauty, not only by his white sands, also because it is surrounded by coconut palm trees, and flanked by extraordinary cliffs, on the north and south, it is a pacific place for who want a different ambience of the common tourist places and crowded beaches, and provides lovely sunset views over the Arabian Sea.

Other places to visit inside of the town are: the small Scientific School of Yoga & Massage, which offer Ayurvedic massage, meditation courses, and lifetime courses in yoga; and the Varkala Cultural Center offers Kathakali dance performances near of the down Beach Road from Temple Junction.
