Many tourist places are in Calcutta, ancient monuments and modern monuments, religious attractions, museums and natural places.
Victoria Memorial: Monument conceived in 1905 by Lord Curzon and built between 1906 and 1921, designed in white marble, with Italian renaissance style, Mughal and British in its architecture style; it is 56,08 m (184 ft) on 25,90 hectares (64 acres). The monument is the favourite place of the tourists in Calcutta, and has a fabulous museum where you can view effigies and photos of prominent personalities; above of the north gateway you can see figures that represent learning, prudence and motherhood.
Marble Palace: Built in 1835, by Rajendra Mallikm, it monument is located at Muktaram Babu Street in north Calcutta. It is a valuable and exquisite art gallery. Marble palace has a marvellous collection of art, sculptures, oil paintings and pictures. So, you can see the major masterpiece of Reuben, original paintings of Rembrandt, Reynolds and Van Goyen. The palace has a zoo, and a rare collection of birds.
Saheed Minar: This monument was built in 1828, after the Nepalese Wars, in commemoration of Sir David Ochter Lony. The monument has an architecture with variants; in the base is Egyptian style, the main part is Syrian style and the cupola is a Turkish style. It is located in the part northern of Maidan. In 1969, the monument was renamed like Sahid Minar in honor to the martyrs of the freedom of the India.
Science City: This great construction has located in eastern metropolitan bypass of Calcutta, this a great place to go with young students and children; the construction of this place is an effort of National Council of Science Museum, in this 21st century marvel, you can find things of science, communications, and environment. This museum was the pioneer of its kind in India. The museum has a complex conventions center.
Tagore House: The place was home of the celebrate family Tagore, home of Ranindranath Tagore, the best poet of Calcutta, today the house is a centre of dance, music, and other arts of the country.
Botanical Garden: It is the most ancient Botanical garden in India, there preserve many kind of trees and plants from other parts of world, the principal attraction of the Garden is the giant Banyan Tree, it has 404 meters of circumference, and is the second tree more largest canopy in the world. In the centre of the Botanical Garden is wonderful librarian, it has a rare collection of books on Botany. The Garden covers about 109 hectares and was founded in 1786 by Colonel Kyd.
Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Bridge: Two important constructions of the modern engineering, and fabulous places for to appreciate the architecture, but bridges in Calcutta are three; the sister is called Vivekananda Setu, those are located over the Hoogly River. Howrah Bridge is also named Rabindra Setu, and was built in 1879. Vidyasagar Setu was completed in 1994; the bridges support a great traffic between Calcutta and Howrah.
Zoo & Horticultural Gardens: The Alipore Zoo was opened in 1875; with 16 hectares is the largest zoo in India, there you can find different kind of animals, birds and some rare species. And the attraction of the zoo is the extinct kind of White Tiger.
Fort William: The place was established around 1969, during the British Raj, and it is located en the western bank of the Hoogly River; today, the area still is a military zone, and if you want to know about Armed Forces, with prior permission you should access a tour of the arsenal.
Kali Temple: The area of pilgrimage might was founded between 17th century to 18th century, books and government document mention this fact, but Kalighat Kali Temple was built in 1809 by Santosh Roy. Temple is located in the banks of Hoogly River, exactly en the bank of Adi, in the south western of Calcutta. It is a important religious centre where you can find the Toran, and arch portal made in 1809, and a Kalighat Pot that is canvas art of Kalighat.
Indian Museum: It is one of the oldest museums in Asia, and this was founded by Asiatic Society in 1814, this museum is archaeological, anthropological, geological, and zoological; and keep many rare objects, such as, Egyptian mummy, skeleton of the whale, collections of the meteorites, fossil of prehistoric animals, fine pieces of Orissa and Buddhist Gandharan art.
